Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle | Hooey Stick

This Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle (or Hooey Stick) is a delightful old country toy that has been entertaining the young (and young at heart) for years!  

 

Rub the stick the right way and the propeller turns. Then, with a slight adjustment, it can be made to turn the other way! Seems to magically respond to the old horse and mule commands "Gee!" and "Haw!"   ...but how?
